If you’re like me, thoughts of what brings joy start with “Something just for me” then quickly turn to “Something for us”. A good meal is more enjoyable shared someone you love, an exciting adventure more exhilarating told and retold with the one who endured it with you. What can I do to reward myself?
I could take a nice trip, but it would be more fun if I took someone with me. I could buy myself something special, but I would get more pleasure out of seeing the joy on someone’s face when they realize I got them something “Just because.” I could spend a day at a spa, yeah, a day spa . . . ahh, but wouldn’t it be nicer if I took my best friend? We could have lunch and sip a little wine together…
Humans are relational creatures. In our busy lives we think we want “me” time, but in reality, what we crave is “me”aningful time. Our batteries are continually being drained by a barrage of meaningless data and repetitive tasks that numb our brains and our souls. Meaningful interaction with those around us recharges. Even more so when we’re doing something fulfilling!
So what does all this have to do with bra shopping? Well, there is one thing that I can do that is truly just for me and that does bring satisfaction – finding a bra that fits properly. A bra is our most intimate and foundational piece of apparel, yet many of us spend our days trussed up in ill-fitted objects of affliction. Like that sliver that you just can’t get; an ill-fitted bra reminds you of its presence, every second you have it on.
We all know the sheer bliss of shedding the thing at the end of the day. It shouldn’t be so. If you’ve got a bra that is fitted properly, its presence should be about as noticeable as your skin. You might be surprised to know just how much an uncomfortable bra can affect your mood. Constant niggling discomfort becomes just one more thing of the many negative triggers coming your way each day. At some point one becomes the breaking point.
If you are always aware of your bra, you’re probably wearing the wrong one. Try a Carole Martin comfort bra, “The most comfortable bra in the world.” Is it the secret to true happiness? Maybe not. Is it something you’ll do just for you? Definitely.
